Ambassadors

The Green Blue is proud to have the support of a number of well known boating personalities who work with us as ambassadors.

Mike Golding

Mike GoldingMike Golding is the first person ever to sail single-handed and non-stop around the world in both directions. He is one of the world’s leading sailors and has now sailed around the world six times – four times of which were solo.

A former fireman, Golding’s first professional success came in the 1990s with the Global Challenge. In 1993-94, he completed his first non-stop solo circumnavigation 'the wrong way', beating Blyth's record by 125 days.

Since then, he has competed in numerous ocean races and has consistently been at the forefront of the professional IMOCA Open 60 class, achieving podium positions in most of the major events and setting three new world sailing records in the process.

Mike was FICO World Champion in 2005/6 and IMOCA World Champion for two successive years 2004/5 and 2005/6; the only British sailor to hold this coveted title.

In January 2007 he was awarded an OBE for his services to the sport of sailing.Married with a son, Mike is a firm believer in the need to protect our future environment. This is also reflected in his extremely successful partnership with sponsor Ecover.  He has been a Project Ambassador for The Green Blue for a number of years, and continues to support its core aims to embed a degree of environmental awareness in all yachtsmen.

Dee Caffari

Dee CaffariBorn in 1973 and raised in land locked Hertfordshire, Dee Caffari now lives on the south coast.

Awarded an MBE in recognition of her solo circumnavigation against the prevailing winds and currents, Dee set a world record by becoming the first woman to complete this ‘wrong’ way round voyage in 2006. More recently Dee competed in the 2008/9 Vendée Globe – a race around the world, non-stop and alone, known within the sailing arena as the pinnacle offshore event. Dee crossed the finish line in 6th place out of the 30 starters.

A love of the ocean and our coastlines has seen Dee become an ambassador for The Green Blue to help encourage all sailors to minimise their impact on the marine environment.

Lady Pippa Blake

Pippa Blake

Lady Pippa Blake is a founding trustee of the Sir Peter Blake Trust; formed with her full support, the Trust is a legacy to Peter’s immense and unique qualities as a yachtsman, environmentalist, educator and motivator. The Trust’s role is to encourage young people to make a positive difference for the planet, through activities that encourage environmental awareness and action, and leadership development.

Pippa’s career has interwoven sailing, the environment and art. She studied Fine Art at Camberwell School of Art in London gaining a First Class BA Honours degree in Painting, before going on to work for the Arts Council of Great Britain and as an assistant to a Museum Designer based in Chelsea, London. She met Peter in 1978, married in 1979 and embarked on a three month adventure to Sydney to deliver the yacht Condor of Bermuda for the Sydney Hobart race 1979. They then moved on to New Zealand where Pippa worked in the organisation and liaison for Ceramco NZ and many subsequent races and expeditions.

In 1993 Pippa resumed her painting career and has since held several solo exhibitions in the UK and Auckland and exhibited widely in group shows mainly in Sussex, Hampshire and London. Pippa’s talent has attracted attention and praise. She was an inaugural award recipient and participant in The Flux Project, a residential artists' programme with an innovative on-line web portal. She also participated  in the National Oceanography Centre of Southampton’s "Ocean’s Project" where artists are matched with marine scientists during an oceanographic voyage.

Thanks to Pippa’s support, The Green Blue was able to learn from the Sir Peter Blake Trust and continues to draw on this programme for best practice and inspiration.

Boyd Tunnock – Scotland

Managing Director of Tunnocks, Boyd Tunnock is more than just the maker of superb tea cakes and caramel wafers, he is an avid sailor and is frequently seen racing his beloved Moody 38 “Lemarac” around the Clyde and West coast of Scotland.

Boyd is well known for his energy and enthusiasm for all matters regarding his business, but also for racing. While racing in 2009 the spinnaker got stuck at the top of the mast, he was first in the bosun’s chair to be hoisted aloft to release the stricken sail, all the time insisting that the helmsman stuck as near as possible to the course!

Tunnocks work to lean manufacturing principles and ensure their factory keeps waste to a minimum and packaging as limited as possible. Tunnocks have been working with The Green Blue to promote sustainable boating throughout Scotland and Boyd’s considerable support has been invaluable to the programme.
