Best Practice - Grey Water
- Choose environmentally sensitive
products avoiding chlorine and
bleach which can be toxic to flora and fauna,
and phosphates which encourage algal
growth
- If you must use bleach, place a small
amount on a cleaning cloth then wipe, ensuring the minimum amount
finds its way into the water
- Keep cooking oils and other food waste
on board and dispose of with non recyclable rubbish or compost at
home
- Minimise the use of soaps and
detergents used in onboard sinks, showers and washing
machines.
- If using a washing machine onboard,
switch to a detergent free wash ball, or use environmentally
friendly washing powders/liquids. This is particularly important on
inland waterways where it is a requirement under British Waterways
licences to use only phosphate free detergents.
- Re-plumb waste water
systems so that all sewage (grey and black water) is
diverted to the holding tank, especially on inland waterways
- Educate students and encourage them to
follow The Green Blue’s Code of
Conduct
- Check out the Marine Toolkit to see how you score and for more
advice
