This season The Green Blue is encouraging you to think about wildlife and the impact your boat may have on it. We also want to encourage the appreciation of wildlife and highlight how marine pollution, litter and carelessness can all effect birds, mammals, fish and other living things in our waters.
Did you know that.......In recent years, the harbour porpoise has suffered a dramatic decline around European coasts and has virtually disappeared from the English Channel and southern North Sea. Scientists declared a baby bottlenose dolphin washed ashore in Cardigan Bay to be one of the most polluted marine animals ever found.
There are 333 fish species recorded from the seas around Britain and 55 recorded in
freshwater habitats. Of the estimated 10 million species in the world's oceans, only 3% have been identified.
Britain has 17 species of bat, many of which feed along the canals and waterways. Due to
habitats and food supply being destroyed, bats are in decline across the UK. The Wildlife and Countryside Act makes it an offence to intentionally damage, destroy or obstruct access to any place used by bats for shelter or protection
There are currently about 65 marine alien species in Britain. The threat of marine invaders to biodiversity is second only to that of habitat loss.
It is predicted that a one-metre rise in sea level would result in the loss of half the world's coastal wetlands; and direct temperature changes can also produce phenomena such as the catastrophic coral bleaching seen in the Indian Ocean during severe El Nino events.
