Once in a blue moon, an
opportunity comes along that provides such a perfect fit with The
Green Blue’s mission that it seems too good to be true – on this
occasion she’s called Calypso. The germ of an idea by the Rogers
family to create a greener version of the iconic Contessa 32 has
transformed into a full scale build, and with plans afoot to
present her at the PSP Southampton International Boat Show 2010
it’s now a full court press at the Jeremy Rogers yard to get her
ready in time.
It’s a journey of no
compromise on the one hand - on safety, performance and quality but
also a journey of pragmatism and constructive debate on the other -
how to hold fast to green ideals yet create something accessible
and achievable for manufacturers and yachtsmen alike. Calypso will
experiment with a new type of teak replacement called Kebony for
her decks and interior; she will embrace hybrid engines, solar
panels and reclaimed and recycled fixtures and fittings; and her
hull is GRP – its longevity arguably making it one of the most
sustainable materials available, even though ‘end of life’
opportunities to recycle it are still limited.
Calypso embodies a
magical combination – a green vision, a classic yacht, a legendary
boat builder and a sector showing a growing appetite for and
interest in sustainability, all supported by the only bespoke
environmental boating programme of its kind – The Green Blue. Join
