Best Practice Grey Water

  • Choose environmentally sensitive products avoiding chlorine and bleach which can be toxic to flora and fauna, and phosphates which encourage algal growth
  • If you must use bleach, place a small amount on a cleaning cloth then wipe, ensuring the minimum amount finds its way into the water
  • Keep cooking oils and other food waste on board and dispose of with non recyclable rubbish or compost at home
  • Minimise the use of soaps and detergents used in onboard sinks, showers and washing machines.
  • If using a washing machine onboard, switch to a detergent free wash ball, or use environmentally friendly washing powders/liquids. This is particularly important on inland waterways where it is a requirement under British Waterways licences to use only phosphate free detergents.
  • Re-plumb waste water systems so that all sewage (grey and black water) is diverted to the holding tank, especially on inland waterways
